Any hopes of the reunification of Cyprus looked permanently dashed in 2004 when a referendum on the United Nations Annan Plan was roundly rejected by Greek Cypriots in the South.
Now, however, hopes are renewed following the election in the Republic of Cyprus (the South) of Demetris Christofias as President. Christofias is not only in favour of a settlement, but he enjoys cordial relations with Mehmet Ali Talat, the Turkish Cypriot leader.
Both men have vowed to reach an accord on reunification as soon as possible - even as early as the end of 2008.
While it is clear that any agreement will require difficult negotiation over a number of issues, it is generally accepted that the really difficult questions will arise over land and property rights.
