There are a number of easy ways to find out who owns a deserted property, writes David Lawrenson

One of the most obvious (and cheap) ways is to put a card through the door. It's possible that someone who is looking after the property will come by from time to time to pick up the post and they can then contact you.

Your card should say that you are interested in buying the property and can move quickly without the need for them to pay estate agency or auctioneer's fees.

Also, you could try ringing the doorbell of a neighbour and ask if they know who owns the property or who, if anyone, is looking after it.

You could leave a card with a neighbour which says that you will pay up to say £300 for any information that may lead to you subsequently purchasing the property.
