Since 1989, the city has changed dramatically, but only recently has it gained the status of important investment spot within the Czech Republic.

Restructuring the local economy took time, mainly because the key factor- FDI inflow - had hovered at a relatively low level for many years. Living in the shadow of more economically advanced and stronger cities like Prague or Brno, Ostrava had to wait to receive serious attention from large FDI investors.
