There's a good joke going around America at the moment: "A few years ago we had Johnny Cash, Steve Jobs and Bob Hope. Now there's no Cash, no Jobs and no Hope". It's not much different over here.

Apparently, it came as a shock to some elements of the media that the Treasury has started studying the likely impact on the UK economy of the euro's demise. Quelle surprise! It's their job, after all, to figure the consequences of any and all economic possibilities and thus put contingencies in place, and since just about anyone can see the single currency is going through a crisis that may prove terminal would place its analysis high up on the agenda.

Indeed, it's only sensible for the government to start planning for the moment when it comes crashing down, as, literally, it could happen at any time.

Money is flooding out of the eurozone by the billions a day, the markets have lost confidence, politicians are flailing, and flailing way too late, and no one has yet come up with a solution. In fact, given that all the players are highly intelligent types, or they wouldn't be where they are, if there was a solution then you'd have thought it would have been announced by now.

So, what should the Treasury's plan be? What are the likely consequences for the UK and for our greatest industry, the oil that fuels the country's economy (bless): financial services? Is there anything we can do now in preparation? Well, yes, there is: plenty.
