Property Investment: Do migrants and ageing populations hold the key about where to invest and what to invest in?
22nd August 2008
By Robin Bowman
Ironically, perhaps, on the day that the government released figures to show that the UK population is up by two million since 2001, numbers also show that those applying to work in the country are down.
That jump in the population is the result of a steady flow of inward migration, with net inflow accounting for more than half the rise during the 12 months to the middle of 2007.
But, despite this surge in immigrants, we also find that for the first time the UK is now home to more pensioners than children - there are 11.58 m pensioners, and 11.52 million under-16s.
This is a pretty fundamental shift in the make up of the UK's population and has big implications for the economy and the property market.
