Property tax probe: Is there a tax probe targeting UK BTL landlords?

In February, Revenue and Customs sent out no less than 500 letters to a select number of self-assessment taxpayers who it believes may be (note the words, may be) making money from buy-to-let investments.
The letters were sent out in mid-February to investors HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) believe may not be declaring all their rental income.
This is thought to be just the start of a wide-ranging crackdown, with many thousands of landlords' accounts yet to be more closely scrutinised.
Accountants are concerned that many who may have quite innocently failed to pay the accurate amount of tax might get caught up in the campaign.
