Raising the alarm - A wave of new boiler safety regulations for landlords is in the offing

Earlier this year the Health and Safety Minister, Lord McKenzie, announced the introduction of a new scheme to improve domestic gas safety.

The announcement followed a Health & Safety Executive (HSE) review of the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations, which, as most landlords know, demands strict inspection and safety checks to be conducted each year and gas safety certificates to be obtained before a property can be rented.

The HSE review concluded there is an unacceptably low public awareness of the risks of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning from badly fitted, inadequately vented or faulty gas appliances.

The HSE arranged for consultants from the University College London to undertake the review on their behalf.
