The FT has a good supplement on Bulgaria today. Well worth the read if you get the chance. Some interesting points concerning Sofia - commercial development occurring near the airport and companies such as HP investing a lot of money in Sofia and creating a lot of skilled IT jobs. Also, if you want to invest in holiday area, the right developments in Sandanski (spa area in the south) will probably easily outdo the black sea coast area or the mountain resorts. Other interesting facts about Bulgaria, wages are up more than 30% in the private sector in the last 12 months and inflation is up about 9%. The concerns expressed are that the government needs to crackdown on corruption particularly with more than €11 bln of EU funding which needs to be appropriated correctly into infrastructure investment and education. They also outline the risk of the credit crunch dampening growth because Bulgaria exports mainly to developed EU countries which could become constrained by the credit crunch. However, all in all the supplement leaves me with a more positive outlook on Bulgaria.
