Quick up date: Capital gains for Spain is increasing from 15% to 18% (for residents) which still makes it more attractive than the UK's 40% rate. Only, if held for some years, am I right in thinking that the UK asset taper relief kicks in so reducing that 40% rate to as little as 16%? Cheers Neil

Or, maybe there's a way of making you assets into a business asset and getting the very generous business asset taper relief. It wouldn't then be worth moving abroad (at least for tax purposes). In a nutshell, it looks like you'd have to let to a trading company for a period of at least 2 years. So what we need is a 3rd party trading company in Poland that wants to rent our properties from us - business opportunity anyone? Andrew

The bits on pensions are not quite right. Under the new rules, anyone can pay into a UK pension irrespective of their residency status for tax purposes. Contribtution levels are also unlimited. The main question is what level of tax relief will be available on any contributions paid by non-UK residents and individuals will need to take advice on that particualr issue. See HMRC web link: www.hmrc.gov.uk/manuals/rpsmmanual/rpsm13103010 In his article, I think Colin was probably referring to the old rules whihc applied for individduals seconded overseas. Hope this helps. Regards, Dave.

Tax rates for non business assets with maximum taper of 24% and 12% (higher and basic tax payers) respectively. These rates for non business assets only apply for disposals after ten complete years. Thanks. Colin@cranleys.co.uk

Andrew It need not be in Poland that the company operates. So there is quite a lot of opportunity here. Need not be profitable either. Colin
