I had the same experience. A little while after applying on line (a week or 10 days), I got a phone call. I was still dubious as to whether the the process would still conclude but it all went pretty smoothly after that. Peter

Have been with Nordea in Poland for a couple of years with no difficulty via internet for transfers. All set up within the uk. You can get documentation witnessed at your "local" Polish Consulate, so no need to even go to the London Embassy.
I did mine at the Bristol Consulate, and they didn't even charge me for the service ! Just gave a donation to a Polish Charity

I opened a Nordea account in Krakow, whole process took about an hour, only passport needed.

The next day on return to England, the internet banking was set up and I could access my account.

I haven't used in anger yet so can't comment further.

Internet banking seems to work well with Nordea and I've now set up and sent several payments. Easy to access and to see what's going on on the account. Bit of a hassle setting up - the Nordea people in London charged to sign the papers and didn't understand Polish (it's a Scandanavian bank). All in all much better than my experience in Czech.

Could not recommend Citibank PL more highly. Transfers from Citi UK can be done online *instantaneously* - this is amazing, because it means you can get money from the UK to a payee in Poland the next day, because most payments are next-day. Also FX rates offered within your Citibank PL accounts (i.e. GBP to PLN) are very good, as long as you stick to the business hours window (something like 10am - 3pm) - during this time I typically get about 2% spread either direction, which is not bad at all, especially considering no transaction cost and instantaneous transfer. Website is probably better than the Citi UK website (no annoying keyboard "security" features, etc.).

Having the ability to get money quickly to a payee has saved my *ss more than once lately...
