I use AOL to connect to the internet and the download will not work

Many people experience difficulties downloading files if they connect to the internet using AOL.

AOL users are recommended to connect as usual, but then use a standard Internet Explorer window to actually download the file.

Click Start > Programs > Internet Explorer to open the IE browser window, then enter your download link into the address bar.

My Mac doesn't recognise .exe files, how do install the e-book?

All the e-books are supplied in zipped files, these work immediately on PCs, but Mac users need another extracting application to open them.

Stuffit Expander is a good one, you need version 6.01 or later, you can download for free from http://www.stuffit.com/expander/macindex.html

I don't have Winzip on my computer, how can I open the e-book

You don't any special software to open the e-books, they are supplied in Self Extracting Zip files which means they contain everything needed to unzip themselves. Just double click the downloaded .exe files, then Click Unzip to extract the contents into the specified location.

I cannot open any of the spreadsheets

Spreadsheets are designed to be opened in a spreadsheet application such as Microsoft Excel and not in Acrobat Reader like the e-books.

The spreadsheets are supplied in a variety of formats for different applications. You can either open them directly from the active links in the e-books, or directly in your choice of spreadsheet program.

I cannot edit a spreadsheet, I am told the chart is protected and read-only

Only certain fields or cells in the spreadsheets are allowed to be edited.

The cells which can be edited are clearly marked and have a explanation of the value that should be entered

Some of the cells contain #VALUE, what does that mean?

Many of the numbers in the spreadsheet are automatically calculated from the figures you enter. If you type an invalid entry, such as letters instead of numbers, then the figures cannot be worked out

Go back and check over the figures you have entered to see which one is wrong

How do I open the spreadsheets on my Mac?

From Apple's website http://www.apple.com/appleworks/ the latest version of the software should be able to read Microsoft Excel spreadsheets.

If you have Appleworks 6.1 then it should work.

If you have Appleworks 6.04 then there is a small file to download to upgrade it to accept Excel files http://www.apple.com/appleworks/update/ - all instructions are on the page

If you have an earlier version of Appleworks (6.0 or 6.03) then please go to http://asu.info.apple.com/swupdates.nsf/artnum/n11700 to upgrade to 6.04, then use the above link ( http://www.apple.com/appleworks/update/ ) to upgrade to 6.1 first.

It seems a little complex - but all the info is on Apple's support page for Appleworks.

As far as we are aware the upgrades are free
