Bulgaria attracts more foreign visitors
03 December 2008
Bulgaria's economy is continuing to benefit from growth in its tourism sector, according to an industry official.

Anelia Krushkova, chair of the state agency on tourism, said visitor numbers went up by nearly a fifth between January and September, reports TravelVideo.TV.

This has prompted her to forecast that the overall figure for 2008 will be 20 per cent up on the amount recorded last year.

Many of the incoming visitors were said to have hailed from other EU member states, such as the UK, Germany and Greece.

An increase in the number of holidaymakers from Russia, Macedonia and Serbia was also recorded over this period, Ms Krushkova added.

According to a new study by the Oxford Business Group, tourism is one of the main contributors to Bulgaria's economy.

Figures from the organisation showed that the sector accounts for 14 per cent of the country's gross domestic product.
