Bulgarians choose new centre-right government to fight corruption
14 July 2009
42% of the Bulgarian electorate chose centre-right party Citizens for the European Development of Bulgaria to form a coalition government following July's general election.
The ejected socialist government, which achieved less than 20% of the vote, was considered too corrupt and weak by Bulgarians.
The change offers new hope that Bulgaria will again be able to resume its full place inside the EU after losing 430 million Euros of European Funds along with a further 300 million Euros of frozen funds.
The election campaign focused on the abuse of power and corruption along with the deterioration of the relationship with the EU.
