Czech PM 'grateful for strong mandate'
08 December 2008
Czech prime minister Mirek Topolanek has been re-elected as leader of the Civic Democrat Party.
The vote, which comes just ahead of the country assuming the presidency of the EU, gives him a renewed mandate following a challenge to his premiership.
Mr Topolanek won 284 votes against his eurosceptic rival Pavel Bem, the mayor of Prague.
Commenting on his success, he said: "I would like to thank you for electing me.
"It feels like a very strong mandate."
Mr Topolanek added that the Czech Republic now has time to prepare and gather strength for its six-month presidency of the EU.
He described it as a "great responsibility" for the eastern European country.
The news follows the release of official figures showing continuing growth in the Czech economy.
Statistics showed that the economy expanded by 4.7 per cent between July and September 2008.
