Czech public expects further economic problems
16 January 2009
The majority of people in the Czech Republic expect the economy to deteriorate further, according to a new poll.

Research commissioned by Czech news agency CTK found that more than three-quarters of consumers believe the country's economic situation will get worse this year.

Respondents blamed the global financial crisis for the ongoing downturn, with 30 per cent expressing fear about the possible impact it could have.

This trend was found to be particularly apparent among those on lower salaries, as people such as university graduates were among the most optimistic.

Almost 30 per cent of respondents stated that the government was handling the situation well, although 40 per cent said they do not believe they are doing a good job.

The government has already said tackling the economic crisis will be one of its main priorities throughout its EU presidency.

A work programme outlining its plans for the next six months confirmed that the country has placed the current financial turmoil high up on its agenda.
