Eastern Europe aims to host football tournament
13 November 2008
The 2020 European Championships could be jointly hosted in Romania and Bulgaria, it has been revealed.
Both nations are reported to be preparing a joint bid to stage the football tournament, which was held in Austria and Switzerland this year.
However, any formal bid is still at an early stage, as football authorities need to secure the backing of both governments.
According to Michel Platini, president of Uefa, this is a necessary requirement for any application to host the event.
Borislav Miahailov, president of the Bulgarian Football Union, added: "The year 2020 is far away but our idea needs a lot of work."
Bulgaria came very close to winning the European Championships in 1994 when they made it to the semi-finals.
However, they were knocked out by Italy before losing in the third-place play-off to Sweden.
The European Championships are being hosted in Poland and the Ukraine in 2012.
