Romanian companies continue to perform strongly
19 November 2008
Many sectors in the Romanian economy are continuing to experience growth, a media outlet has revealed.

According to Financiarul, some industries have apparently not suffered significantly as a result of the global financial crisis, with some even expanding considerably.

Retail was highlighted as one area which is weathering the storm, as people in Romania are continuing to shop for goods and services.

As a result, some leading retail chains have opted not to alter their business plans in light of external economic developments.

Financiarul added that the tourist trade is also performing strongly, and is likely to continue doing so for the next year at least.

Traian Badulescu, spokesman of the National Tourism Association, was quoted as saying: "There was a real boom in the sector.

"The trend will continue next year, as recession is still out of the question for us."

However, official figures cited by Reuters recently revealed that the Romanian central bank is expecting inflation to go up next year.

Forecasts for 2009 have been raised from 4.2 per cent to 4.5 per cent.
