Slovakia commended for sustainable development
30 October 2008
Slovakia has been praised for encouraging the creation of environmentally friendly leisure attractions across the country.
The World Travel Awards highlighted the nation as an example of how some places are keen to encourage and promote sustainable development.
Graham Cooke, founder of the organisation, said it compares favourably with more established countries such as Spain, France and the UK.
Indeed, these three places were criticised for "dragging their heels" with regards to reducing their impact on the environment.
Mr Cooke commented: "They have much to learn from the passion and enthusiasm of emerging destinations such as Slovakia."
He added that he hopes the launch of the World Travel Awards will lead to more countries shifting their emphasis towards helping the environment.
Slovakia is obliged to meet various environmental requirements as per the terms of its European Union membership.
The country became a member of the international body in 2004.
