Slovakian newspaper hopeful about economy
24 November 2008
The Slovakian media has expressed optimism about the country's ability to withstand the global financial turmoil.
According to the Slovak Spectator, economic growth in the eastern European country is slowing down.
However, the newspaper believes that it is still one of the "top performers" in the European Union and is likely to become a "growth champion".
The publication's comments were made after official figures revealed that the Slovakian economy saw year-on-year expansion of 7.1 per cent during the third quarter of 2008.
Meanwhile, Silvia Cechovicova of CSOB bank has speculated that homegrown factors are likely to have a large influence on the economy during the coming months.
Speaking to the Slovak Spectator, she stated that household consumption and investments could become two of the main drivers of growth over the next year.
The predictions come ahead of Slovakia's accession to the eurozone, as the country is due to adopt the single European currency at the beginning of 2009.
